Aquaculture
In marine aquaculture, the basis of the offer are indigenous species of the highest quality Mediterranean fish – sea bream, sea bass and bluefin tuna.
However, in recent years significant efforts have been made to diversification, so from Croatian farms can be purchased meagre (Argyrosomus regius), dentex (Dentex dentex) and greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili).
Also increasing importance is given to bio production, primarily sea bass and sea bream.
In freshwater pond aquaculture, the dominant species is carp. As fish are bred in polyculture in Croatian ponds, in addition to the main one, several secondary or supplementary fish species are also farmed, e.g. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), ailver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), catfish (Silurus glanis), pike (Esox lucius) and pike perch (Stizostedion lucioperca) and some other commercially less significant species.
Of the coldwater species in the Republic of Croatia, the most cultivated is rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss). In addition to rainbow trout, brown trout (Salmo trutta) is also cultivated. It is sent to the market in a weight of 250 - 400 g.
Recently, large trout have been grown more and more in cold-water ponds and in certain marine localities.
